Bell Ringer: Solving Systems Using Matrices

Math 1 Honors Name________________________ Period____

Step 5 was huge!! Let’s break it down into a few more steps. Follow the steps below:

Steps 1 & 2 - Rewrite the system of linear Step 3 - Find the determinant of the
equations as a matrix equation, in the form coefficient matrix.
of AX=B
2x – 5y = 12
-2x + 3y = -8

Step 4 – Find the inverse of the coefficient Step 5 – When you multiply both sides of
matrix. Leave the fraction outside of the AX=B by A-1, you get A-1AX=A-1B. What do you
matrix (this will make it easier during step 5). get when you multiply A-1A?

Because A-1A gives us the identity, we don’t

need to rewrite both of those matrices on
the left side when continuing on. Now we will
just use X=A-1B.

Step 5a – Rewrite the equation in X=A-1B Step 5b – Multiply the two matrices on the
form. right side together. (Leave the fraction out
front).

Step 5c – Multiply the fraction out front Step 5d – Write your answer to the system of
through your matrix from 5b (scalar equations.
multiplication).
