Multi-Culture Diversity Lesson Plan

Book: The Name Jar, Yangsook Chio, 2001

Grade Level: Elementary grades 3 – 5

Teacher: Darcey LaRance

Multicultural Theme: Assimilation, Getting Along with Others

Materials: The book The Name Jar by Yangsook Chio, worksheets, pencils,

Standard: CCSS.ELA- Literacy. R L. 1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a
story, using key details.

Objective: Students will be able to understand what multi-culture diversity is when relating to
the story. Class will reevaluate what they learn in groups by answering questions on a work
sheet. Than the whole class will have a chance to make comments or share their version of
assimilation into a new culture group.

Procedure

Introduce: Show the book The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi and say, “Today we are
going to see what happens when have a new class member from a different culture. Have
any of you been the new student in class, or moved from a different part of the country to
a new and different place? How did that make you feel being the new one in class? How
did that make you feel being different than your classmates?

Read: Teacher reads the book aloud

Discuss:
 Question 1: How did Unhei feel on her first day of school?
 Question 2: What happen to Uhei on the bus?
 Question 3: Why did Uhei not tell her new classmates her name?
 Question 4: What did the class do to help Uhei?
 Question 5: What name did Uhei choose? Why?
Activities:
 Working in small groups, students discuss and fill out the
questions.
 The class will review the questions and discuss the importance of
multi-cultural diversity.
Evaluation: Teacher will review worksheet and encourage class conversation concerning
multi-culture diversity.
