This is an example of assessment AS learning. It was used with ten
students on Wednesday November 22nd during a math provocation on measuring length. The students were given various objects to measuring using unifix cubes and once the objects were measured they ordered them from longest to shortest. This piece is assessment AS learning because the students were guided to monitor their own progress and determine what they needed to do next in order to be successful (Growing Success Kindergarten Addendum, p. 6). While they were working through the task of measuring and sorting, Teacher Candidate was asking questions such as “how do you know they are in order from longest to shortest?” encouraging students to reflect on the steps they took to reach the learning goal which helped to build confident learners. The anecdotal record sheet notes a 1, 2, and 3 with check marks beside each number. This was a way to track the success criteria of the learning goal and to ensure student goals were being met while they worked.
