Final Reflection

I have learned a lot in Linguistic 12. I learned how to cite correctly in MLA format. Until

the first quarter in UCSB, I never worked on a “works cited” page and did not know how to cite and

what to cite. Learning to cite have helped me a lot on my writing assignments in not only linguistic

class but also other classes. In addition, I learned about my common language mistake. I used to

start sentences with conjunction; I used to have wrong word collocations. In this class, I learned

how to utilize the website just-the-word.com and Writefull to look for correct word combinations.

What’s more, by doing the four language tutorials, I learned more about sentence structure,

cohesion and coherence, and accurate word choice. I examined my pattern of subject and verb in a

sentence. I worked on the connection between paragraphs and sentences, which made my article

well-organized. I also had classmate to look at my word choices, which made me aware of my

often-used inaccurate collocations. The book Language Power would help me a lot in writing

projects in the future. The instruction on the book was vey clear and easy to follow; the practice

helped me a lot on identifying the problems in my writing and revising them. When I find that I

make many mistakes in one particular section of written language, I can have a self-study tutorial

based on the book Language Power. All in all, The language self-study project experience in this

course was really helpful. This project have helped me to achieve the goal of writing without

grammar mistakes and writing well-organized articles.
