Discussion Question #10

Question: How does Douglass define freedom?

Douglass defines freedom as being dually paired with slavery as one of the greatest

antagonistic forces (pg. 359). Douglass believes that freedom is a God-given right and that it

would be ridiculous to believe that man “does not know that slavery is wrong for him”. With

both of these comments by Douglass being very blanket statements, they hold a lot of ground in

their meaning. In unfolding Douglass’ remarks about freedom, it seems to mean that freedom,

surprisingly enough, is just as wrong as slavery is. Freedom should not be something that needs

bought or earned or deserved. Freedom is simply a natural and deserving right for all people. It

becomes, however, a device of control when used in regards to being a prize to obtain. Without

the forcing of slavery upon African Americans, there would be no such thing as “freedom”. It

would simply be mankind maneuvering the Earth as equals.
