Math Experience # 4

Math Skill- Counting and Matching

Age- 4-5

Number of students- 6

Content Standard- 1.PK.4b Count to 10 by demonstrating one to one correspondence using

objects.

Objectives- Participation in this activity will increase the child’s ability to

1) Identify the next number in a series of numbers up to 5.

2) Count each object once (e.g., one-to-one correspondence).

Materials- Counting puzzles pieces (one half has objects and the other half has the whole

number)

Activity- Explain to the group that we will be counting objects and finding the corresponding

number. Ask the group if they had ever done a puzzle before? A puzzle is two pieces that fit

together. To do this activity we are going to count objects on one piece then find the number that

represents the object's. The number of objects has to match the whole number so the pieces can

fit together. Hold up the puzzle piece that has the objects. “Lets count how many lollipops do

you see? Lets count, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.” Now let's find the number 5 to connect the puzzle pieces.

“Does it fit? Yes, the pieces fit.” As a group count another set of objects and find the whole

number. After the group does a few together have the children try on their own.
What happened- The children in the group were able to count the objects on the puzzle pieces

and most of them can find the whole number. The children were able to count the objects one by

one but only up to ten. Anything after ten the objects would get smaller and they would

accidently count the same object twice. The children were able to connect the puzzle pieces.

What next- Develop a counting lesson where the children can go on a scavenger hunt to find

numbers around the room, then find the same number of objects.

Example- Find the number 6 then have children run and find 6 objects.

Source- Supplies from work, original lesson plan.
