A Surprising Party
Yesterday was May’s birthday. She was very happy. She woke up
early and looked around her room. She could not see any presents. She
was sad that her parents had forgotten about her birthday. After
breakfast, she went to school. Her classmates gave her presents and
cards. However, May was still unhappy. After school, May went home.
When she entered the house, she saw a big cake and other delicious
food on the table. Her parents and brother wished her happy birthday.
She received a big teddy bear from her parents. It was a surprising party
for May.
Elephants
The elephant IS the largest living land animal. The African
elephant may reach up to 3.5 metres tall and weigh as much as 5,000
kilograms. The Indian one is smaller but it is gentler and more easily
trained to work for man.
The elephant’s most useful limb is its trunk, which is very strong
and can lift a heavy log. It breathes through the trunk and uses it to
suck up water when it wants a shower. The trunk is also used to bring
food to its mouth. The bulls have huge tusks which can grow up to 3
metres long. They use the tusks for digging up roots to eat and
carring things. The cows have tusks too, but they are much smaller.

Sunflower
What can you do with the thirty - foot flowers? You can’t keep it
in a little flower pot, that’s for sure. However, scientists say that there
are many uses for the sunflower, which has been known to grow as tall
as thirty feet. Native Americans have been using this plant as a source
of nutrition for years. Only recently have others been realizing its value.
The seeds of the sunflower are high in protein, calcium, and vitamin D.
Birds love this seeds, as do many people. Grinding the seeds makes
delicious flour. Oil can be obtained from the seeds and used for
cooking. The stems can be used to make paper, fuel, or fertilizer. Even
the roots can be eaten. They can be eaten raw, baked, fired, or slice in
salad.
A red rose may more beautiful and romantic, but it doesn’t have
nearly as many uses as the sunflower.
