Personal Anthem: Riches

By Jeanne D. Rhein

Riches We weren't plugged into a stereo

They say that times were tough then Though some may have been raised
bopping to the latest band
poor
That money was very tight We would all sit at the table
You can see it wasn't me
But I remember my childhood Everyone in their place
We ate collards we ate biscuits
And I know that can't be right There were never any surprises
We ate fatback and blackeyed peas
Mom would cook our dinner We recognized every face
We said yes sir we said no sir
Dad came home at five Brothers to the left of me
We said thank you ma'am and please
We were all sitting at the table Sisters to the right
So when you talk of family life
Waiting for him to arrive ... That's the way we ate dinner
Or how it used to be
And boy that can't be beat Every single night
Though many had more money
We didn't eat in front of the TV We laughed we joked we talked we ate
None were as rich as me
Or with a phone in our hand We were a family don't you see
