MATH 133 Tutorial 1 Winter 2019

1. Three Nissans, two Fords, and four Chevrolets can be rented for $106 per day. At
the same rental rates, two Nissans, four Fords, and three Chevrolets cost $107 per
day. Given that the rental rate of a Chevrolet is $13 per day, determine the rental
rates for the other two kinds of cars.

2. Consider the system of equations, where k is some real constant.

(
2x − y = −1
kx + 2y = 0

(a) If k = 3, then find the solution of the system.

(b) If k = −3, then find the solution of the system.
(c) Is there any value(s) of k such that the system has no solution? If so, then
what are they? If not, then justify your answer!

3. Show that the following system has infinitely many solutions and write the general
solution in parametric form. Hint: Use z = t as a parameter.
(
x + y − 2z = −4
x + 2y − 4z = 1

4. Recall that the elementary operations on systems of linear equations are the three
following:
(i) Multiply a whole equation by a nonzero number.
(ii) Swap two equations.
(iii) Add any multiple of one equation to another equation.
Using those three operations, simplify the following social media riddle that we
have seen in class, and find the solution.
