The invention of stainless steel.

Steel is a metal with important characteristics like ductility, hardness and

tensile strength, but it has a disadvantage that it rusts because it is constitute
primarily by iron in a small amount, but it still be iron.

Throughout the ages, humans find different applications to steel despite

his big disadvantage. When armor base on powder were developed, a
metallurgist name Harry Brearly improve some of them by grooving the barrels,
this method causes the bullet to spin and increase it accuracy, after a few months
metallurgists realize that they need a material which resist wear caused by the
frictions of bullets which make barrels too big for the bullets.

When Brearly heard about the problem, he put at work and begin to
develop a steel alloy that would resist erosion.

After various attempts, he noticed that one of them retained its luster, while
the other samples had rusted.

The sample was compound by 12 percent chromium which reacted with

oxygen of the environment to form a thin, protective film which restore itself
whether it was scratched.
