Annotated Bibliography

My essay will be answering the question of why mental health rates have increased. I

will be using multiple sources from all over and staying away from biased articles. The sources I

will be using is newspapers, articles, studies, and also many other sources. I want to know what

the main cause of this is or if it has always been a huge problem but now it is just publicized

more.

Folk, Jim. “Why Is Mental Illness On The Rise?” Anxiety Center. 25 February 2019

https://www.anxietycentre.com/FAQ/why-is-mental-illness-on-the-rise.shtml

The article, ”Why is Mental Illness On The RIse” by Jim Folk and was posted onto the

Anxiety Center webpage. This article gives us an overview at some options for why mental

illness rates have increased. Also, this site gives us multiple statistics on how rates have

increased. In the article it was stated that there was a study done that shows nearly 20% of the

adult population suffers from a mental illness, this is up 18.1% since years past.

This article is meant to be informational, to inform the audience that mental illness is on

the rise. It even states in the piece that life is easier but this is conflicting with our mental health.

I believe this piece is directed towards anyone who reads it, it could be for parents to show

awareness since they did not grow up with this being a huge issue or even for kids who are

attached to their phones and avoid any social contact.

This article was written by Jim Folk and Marilyn Folk, and they have their BScN. It wa

updated last on February 25,2019, which means this information is very suitable and not

outdated. This was posted by the anxiety center website, which is a site that doctors are apply

to use when informing their patients.

With this article, I will be using mostly the stats provided. These are tremendous

changes in the rates so I find that it is an important part to my piece. I also will be listing some of

the listed reasons on why the rates have increased.

Fox, Maggie. “Major Depression on the rise among everyone.new data shows” NBC Health

News. 10 May 2018

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/major-depression-rise-among-ever

yone-new-data-shows-n873146

This article written by NBC News, Maggie Fox, about how the rates of major depression

are on the rise among everyone. This article gives many statisics and very few opinions. It is a

very infmormational piece. There are charts provided to show the difference in the rates and

how they have increased.

The audience that I feel as if this article is reaching out to is the parents. I believe this

because it is talking about how common this is for children. I think it is trying to show the parents

that they need to look out for early signs and make sure to give their kids the correct attention

when they are feeling under the weather.

This piece was written by Maggie Fox, who is a member of NBC News. NBC News is a

reliable source and many people use this source to get the news of what is going on in todays

world. NBC does not use bias opinions, they only use facts. This piece was last updated on May

11,2018; this piece is almost a year old but the information is still suitable and most liekly the

stats have not changed by alot within the past year.

From this article to my essay, I will be using the stats and how they have increased since

2016. This will answer my question by showing how the rates have increased, and by seeing

when the rates increased it may be possible to tell from what it was caused by.

International, Filmoption. “Mental Illness” Fillmoption International. 1 May 2009

http://digital.films.com.sinclair.ohionet.org/p_ViewVideo.aspx?xtid=5552

This happens to not be a writting piece but is a very informational video about mental

illness by the Filmoption International. This is a video that strictly gives you facts and

information. This video helped me understand everything a little better, rather than reading it.

I feel as if this video was directed towards teens. I think this is towards teens, because

everyone knows teens would much rather watch a video than read an article. And also just by

the tone used in the writing, also makes me think it is directed towards teens.

The video was written by Filmoption International, which is a reliable source. This is not

only a reliable source because it was provided through the Sinclair library but this video

company is a very know copany for their informational videos.

I will be taking alot of information from this video for my piece. This was a very

informational and helpful piece. The information provided was not biased nor over explained, to

where it is difficult to understand. This video informaion will be used alot in my piece.

MacMillian, Amanda.”Mental Illness Is On The RIse in the US for a Frustrating Reason” Health

18 April 2017

https://www.health.com/depression/8-million-americans-psychological-distress

This article, “Mental Illness Is On The Rise in the US for a Frustrating Reason,’ by

Amanda MacMillian. This is a piece that not only gives you stats on the topic but also gives you
Hendrixson 4

some background. There are many different researches that are talked about in this piece and

also stats, there is still very few biased opinions which is good.

I feel as if this article is directed towards adults, because of the information given. I

believe this information is alot more complex and it would be hard for a child to understand the

context. A teen may be able to read this piece and understand it but thy might have some

questions about some of the information.

This is a reliable source, many people use this site for answers to personal questions,

such as things where it is not nessacary for them to go to the doctor. This site was last updated

October of 2018, which is recent, which means the information will be accurate and not out of

date.

From this article, I will be using the researches that were used within my piece to show

the support behind my facts. I will also include some statisics that are stted within this piece, but

there are not many compared to the other pieces.

Springob, Amanda. “Interview with Amanda Springob: Mental Health Youth Speaker” TED. 13

March 2017

https://www.drjulieconnor.com/interview-with-amanda-springob/

This interview with Amanda Springob over mental health was a past Ted Talk. This piece

gives us infomation on how she was impacted by her mental illness. Amanada gives an

overview on how she overcame her illness.

This article has an audience going towards teens. I think she wrote this towards teens

because her teen years was when she was most effiected by it. She wants to get her message

out, so that kids will not have to go through what she has gone through.
Hendrixson 5

This is a reliable source, but not for statisics. I think this is a good source if you are

wanting a back story to why someone could feel this certain way. I can not use this piece for any

statics though, because I am not sure where she has recieved her information from.

I will be using her story within my piece. I will be explaining this story to show the people

effected by an illness that you can overcome it and it does not have to consume your entire life.

This was last updated in 2017, but her story has not changed so it is still reliable. There may be

more information now but nothing has changed.

Twenge, Jean M. “Are Mental Health Issues On the Rise?” Psychology Today. 12 October 2015

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/our-changing-culture/201510/are-ment

al-health-issues-the-rise

The article, “Are Mental Health Issues On the Rise” written by Jean M Twenge. This is

an informational piece, with some biased opinions. The biased opinions will not be included in

my final, it just so happened we came across a great source but it has biased opinions.

The audience of this is teens, I think this because it is a short simple reading piece. No

teenager is going to want to read a long story about someones life story. Also the way things

are worded, makes it seem to me that they are just going to direct this at teens.

I believe this is a reliable source, as long as I do not use the biased opinions. Other than

the very few biased opinions, I will be using the information from this piece. This was updated in

2015, it may be a little outdated but the information provided had not conflicted much with the

other inforamtion, I have recieved.

I will be using a little bit of everything from this article. This was a very helpful article for

my piece, it hits the topic perfectly. Once again my topic is, why have mental health rates

increased?

Warton,Tony. “Mental Illness In America: How Do We Adress A Growing Problem?” National

Issues Forums. 2014

AN=1232583&db=nlebk

This piece written by Tony Warton, “Mental Illness In America: How Do We Address A

Growing Problem?” This is a great piece to use because the information varies from my other

pieces. This piece will add a special touch to my essay.

The audience of this piece is adults and possibly even doctors. I think this because they

want to address a growing problem. Adults and Doctors who would be most likely to contribute

on how to get the word out would be these types of illnesses and how they have became to rise

in rates.

This piece is a relaible piece, not only because the Sinclair libary provided this for me.

This piece is a little outdated, 2014, but besides the date all of this information is still very valid.

This topic is still kind of pushes to the side and not been address like it should be.

I will be using alot, and almost all of the information from this piece. The only information

I will not be using is the information I know had been outdated and/or is not relevant in todays

wold anymore. This piece is going to add a great touch by trying to get the word out.
