IOC Structure ( Prose, Poetry , Drama )

• State name of extract/poem and poet

• Place the extract in the play/collection

• Context – Author and poem, and why this is significant to the


specific piece you have in front of you

• Title – Anything significant (again, more likely to be related to


poetry)

• Narrator/Speaker/Author – What is their attitude towards


the subject they are talking about?

• Main Theme(s)

• Message to the Reader (this is usually more developed for


poetry)

• Identify Tone – Explain why it is this way and how you know it
(identify a quote from poem to back this up and discuss
implications) and how it supports the speakers attitude towards
the subject. Also consider the impact the tone has on the reader
– what message does it help portray?

• Identify Devices – Explain implied meaning and how it


connects to the theme/character etc develop analysis, meaning
and effect as far as possible before moving on to the next device.

• Comment on the Structure – What does it do? What are the


specific structural devices? How do they contribute to the
overall meaning/theme/characterization in the extract/poem?
