My essay will attempt to answer why obesity rates are rising faster than ever in the

United States. I will explore the different socioeconomic influences, possible causes, and

resolves for obesity. I will also be exploring which different groups of people are affected by

this. I will determine if race, gender, location, or income has any relevance in obesity rates.

American Adults Just Keep Getting Fatter is a New York Times article written by Matt

Richtel and Andrew Jacobs on March 23, 2018 that investigates the causes of increasing obesity

rates within America. The authors’ purpose in writing this article is to inform the public of new

findings and studies performed in order to discover causes and sources for American obesity.

The article explains that attempts at educating and warning people about the health risks of a

poor diet have not worked. The audience for this piece is the general public, as its purpose is to

inform us. It was written recently, telling us that it will have more relevant and reliable

information I can use for my final paper. The authors of this article are credible, as the article can

be validated by the CRAAP method. I plan to use this source to introduce the lack of help

campaigning against obesity has accomplished, and to allude to a few ideas of why surveys are

suggesting portions are the culprit for rises in obesity.

“Why Are Americans Obese?” PublicHealth, PublicHealth,

www.publichealth.org/public-awareness/obesity/.

Why Are Americans Obese? is an article written by Anju Abraham for the Public Health

Organization that explores the reasons and consequences for the increase in obesity in America.

The article first explains who is medically considered obese, and also presents three specific

ideas with studies for why this epidemic might be happening. The article then moves in depth to

what specific groups of people this is specifically affecting in order to help explain the epidemic.

It uses gender, income, and race to show the type of people this is affecting the most. The

consequences and what we can do to help close the article. This piece is intended for the public,

as it explains how we can help on a personal level. The Public Health Organization is a reputable

source. It provides free healthcare-related resources for students, professionals, and patients.

They have been cited by state governments, universities, and federal departments. I plan to use

this source’s research on which communities and groups of people are affected.

The Real Causes of America’s Obesity Epidemic: Where Does Your State Rank? Is an

article written by Reynard Loki on AlterNet on December 10, 2015 that provides vital

information about state-to-state obesity statistics. The article provides infographics and ranks

how each state measures up. It cites several studies and lists their findings in bullet points. This

article attempts to ask an important question to reflect upon. Why are these certain states the

most obese, and why are these certain states the healthiest? This will be vital to observe in my

final paper as I search for an answer through other sources. The article attempts to answer the

question as well, citing that the poorest states tend to be more obese. I will review this in my

final paper. This source is credible because it follows all guidelines of the CRAAP method. As I

mentioned before, I will use this article in my final paper by attempting to answer how these

states tie in to why obesity is increasing.

will use this article in my final paper in a few ways. I plan to include these findings about

childhood obesity as my first use. Secondly, I will use this article’s comparisons of America to

other countries heavily. Using research from other countries in my paper will help a lot.

Wass, an endocrinologist and expert on obesity. He explains his ideas for a resolve of obesity in

steps being taken are working and not working, and how industry plays a part in this. John Wass

is an expert and can be verified as a credible source. I plan to use this interview to make my

paper well rounded and use sources outside of America. I will especially use his ideas at the

conclusion of my paper when I end on how we can start a resolve.
