SUMMARY OF EL FILIBUSTERISMO
The hero of this novel is a rich jewelers named Simoun. He escaped from those soldiers
who are following him. He went to cuba where he become a rich and befriended at the
Spanish officials. After many years he returned to his fatherland where he can move
freely. He become a powerful because of his good relation to the governor general. But,
deep in his heart, he is secretly cherishing a terrible revenge against the Spanish
authorities.
Simoun is a man of wealth and mystery a very close friend of the Spanish authorities.
Because of his relation and advantage to the authorities, he encourages corruption in
the government promotes the oppression of the masses , and haste n the moral
degradation of the country so that the people may become desperate and fight. He
smuggles arms and attempt the armed uprising id not materialize because at the last
hour he hears the sad news that Maria Clara is died in the nunnery. To rescue Maria
Clara is his first reason why she pushed his terrible plan.
After a long time he perfects his plan to overthrow the Spanish government. On the
occasion of the wedding of Paulita Gomez and Juanito Pelaez, he gives as wedding gift
to them a beautiful lamp. Only Basilio knows his plan that when the wick of his lamp
burns lower the nitroglycerine, hidden in its secret compartment, will explode, destroying
the house where the guests including the governor general and the government
officials. But then, Isagani is a lover’s of Paulita who has been rejected . He is watching
sorrowful outside the house. Basilio warns Isagani to go away because the lighted lamp
will explode. Upon hearing Isagani realizes that his beloved Paulita was in grave
danger. To save her life, he rushes into the house, seizes the lamp, and hurls it into the
river.
At that time Simoun was discovered his plans, he cornered by the soldiers but he
escaped wounded. He goes to Padre Florentino house and when the Spanish authority
knows that his in Padre Tolentino. The Spanish warned to the padre and Simoun knows
it. Upon knowing that news Simoun was committed suicide rather than he arrested.

3. Humor worked best where a more serious presentation of the general practices of
religion during that time and even up to present would have given the novel a
darker and pessimistic tone.
4. Rizal’s description of the lavish fiesta showed the comic antics at church and the
ridiculous expense for one day of festivies.
This preface to Noli Me Tangere ensures that readers understand that the novel is
intentionally political. Although the pages that follow this short chapter often preoccupy
themselves with melodramatic love scenes and action plots, it’s clear from the very first
pages that Rizal is primarily interested in exploring what was then the taboo topic of
political corruption in the Philippines.
