QUESTION: How do current sex education systems in the United States impact attitudes towards abortion? ACADEMIC SUBJECTS INVOLVED: Physiology, Health, Education, Political Science 2101 Dunblane Court Walnut Creek, CA 94598 January 23, 2019 Topic Approval Committee Northgate High School 425 Castle Rock Road Walnut Creek, CA 94598 Dear Madam: The experiential project | have chosen is composed of three parts. First, | will be conducting a survey ofall Northgate students to gather information on their knowledge of reproductive health and their respective attitudes towards abortion, through which | will hopefully find a connection between the two. Secondly, | will spend at least 5 hours volunteering at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Walnut Creek, during which | will earn about reproductive health firsthand. And lastly, | will be working with the Planned Parenthood staff to create a presentation for the students and parents in our community. The event will be held off-campus and will address the important aspects of sex education that may be missed in schools. Through this project, | aim to aid the women in our community by assisting at Planned Parenthood and also to educate my community on various aspects of sex education that are sometimes overlooked in pulblic school curriculum. ln my paper | hope to answer the question: How do the current sex education systems in the United States impact attitudes towards abortion? | am particularly interested in uncovering a connection between the levels of knowledge people have on reproductive health and their respective attitudes towards abortion. In my research I will incorporate my findings from the survey | conduct and | will also complete library and internet research. | will specifically be looking at the sex education programs in public schools across the country and then attempting 10 find a parallel between that and the area's view on abortion. | will also address factors such as content, depth of seid content, frequency of teaching, and at what age sex education began. This project will be challenging for me because it requires a multitude of different factors, like data analysis, public speaking, and plenty of public outreach. In addition, it will require me to deeply increase my knowledge of reproductive health in order to volunteer at Planned Parenthood and to communicate that knowledge to others. Overall, this project will require approximately 25-35 hours of work and should cost $50-$100 for supplies, x hope this meets with your approval. Sincerely, Piper Sterling Reper. English Teacher: Md.
