Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: The Solar System

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 6th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S6E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about current scientific views of the universe and how
those views evolved.
c. Analyze and interpret data to compare and contrast the planets in our solar system in terms of: size relative
to Earth, surface and atmospheric features, relative distance from the sun, and ability to support life.
Technology Standard Addressed:
1c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate
their learning in a variety of ways.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:
☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: This lesson forces a higher student engagement level. I could further engage the students by
offering extra credit points on the next test for those who answer a certain amount of questions correctly.
Representation: The students will have the option to complete the lesson on computer, phone, or tablet
which offers several different representations of the lesson.
Action and Expression: Students are able to express their knowledge in a variety of ways. The review
includes multiple choice, fill in the blank, and matching to differentiate responses.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, students will have prior knowledge over solar systems. This activity will serve as a
review for the Test. All material covered in this activity is review and was already covered previously.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Students will come into class and have a seat and listen to the teacher’s class instruction. Instruct students to
take out mobile device of their choice and log onto their Kahoot! Accounts silently. Teacher will demonstrate
what the activity will cover. Teacher will answer any questions and then instruct students to begin working.
Make trips around room to assess the students. The activity will be stretched across a whole class period to
be sure all questions are answered and enough time is available.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, we will get together as a class and review one last time before dismissing the class. The
goal is that everyone in the class has a good understanding.

How will the data be used?

Nothing will be collected as a result of this activity except for student knowledge for the teacher. The review
time and information being reviewed will be for the students to use for studying. I plan to discuss the
anonymous data with the entire class in order to help them learn more effectively. I also plan to use the data
to differentiate teaching instruction for my students. The results from this review will show me which
question type do my students preform best with.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I hope to learn more about my students and what types of questions they prefer. This can help me when
creating test questions and forming lessons and the assessment questions that follow.

Reflective Practice: The activity I created has a positive impact on student learning. It keeps the students
engaged in a fun and cooperative way. All the important information that’ll be on the test is reviewed for
which requires the class to access their prior knowledge from previous classes to answer each review
question. A way I can further extend this lesson is by providing a practice take home test with similar
questions to the students who may need or want a little extra help.
