SEDIMENTATION AND FILTRATION

PROBLEM 1: A water treatment plant settling tank has an overflow rate of 600 gal/d.ft2 & a depth of 6
ft. What is the residence time?

PROBLEM 2: Flow into a sedimentation basin is 3.4 cubic feet per second. The sedimentation basin will
be divided into two tanks, each with an overflow rate of 500 gal/day-ft2. What is the surface area of
each tank?

PROBLEM 3: A sedimentation basin has a recommended detention time of 4 hrs. The flow is 0.7 MGD.
What should be the volume of the tank, in cubic feet?

PROBLEM 4: A small water plant has a raw water inflow rate of 0.6 m3/s. It was found through
experimentation that the particles after flocculation all settle at a rate of v a= 0.004 m/s. A proposed
rectangular settling tank has an effective settling zone of L=20m, H=3m &W=6m.

(a) Can 100% removal be expected?

(b) If not, what percent of the particles are removed?

PROBLEM 5: In relation to Problem 4, how big would the basin need to be to remove 100% of the
particles that have a settling velocity of 0.004 m/sec?

PROBLEM 6: A wastewater was tested in a settling column test. The particular wastewater is proposed to
be treated in a rectangular sedimentation tank having a detention time of 2 hours and depth of 4 meters.
If the wastewater flow rate is 7,500 m3/day, what needs to be the area and volume of the sedimentation
tank?

PROBLEM 7: A settling tank in water treatment plant has an inflow of 2m 3/ min and a solids concentration
of 2100mg/L. The effluent from this settling tank goes to sand filters. The concentration of sludge coming
out of the bottom of the settling tank (underflow) is 18000mg/L & the flow to the filters is 1.8 m 3/ min.
(a) What is the underflow rate? (b) What is the solids concentration in the effluent (flow to the filters) (c)
How large must the sand filters be (m2) if the filter loading is 4 gal/ ft2. min?
