 When Gloria and I started writing songs, we would get all
excited about an idea .. some new way 01 seeing. We'd pour
everything we had into it ... drain that idea that excited us
right out into a songo Then we'd hope! Hope that somehow our
idea, our way 01 seeing, our new song would make a difference
in this old world. We knew it was a lot to hope - that what two
crazy kids believed could change anything (never mind the
world) - but we went right on hoping and bel ieving, just the
same.

I guess it's stilllike that with uso This new song "1 Am
Loved" is a good example. We've heard a thousand times that God
loves USo But one day that meaning hit uso WE ARE LOVED!
Really loved I Not just lor what we can do, or what we have, or what
we have to offer. Not out 01 pity or obligation. People love like that.
They love what they think we are. We all know that about each
other. We play games to keep it that way. We try to alway s
show the side 01 ourselves that we think people love
us lor. And we have learned from harsh experience
that il we don't, we lose! (People can change their
minds about loving us.)

Sometimes we play our games very well.

Sometimes we 1001 everyone except ourselves,
and deep in side we say, "Yo u love me ... But il you
really knew, you wouldn't."

I think some 01 us have a hard time even

liking ourselves. We think we don't have enough to
offer, and that makes it hard to love anyone else l Giving
is then conditional, tentative. There is a wall 01 protection .
that tough shell 01 " I'm not going to let you hurt me."

We all know lolks who aren 't very easy to work with because they
don't leel loved. They're delensive and wary, often depressed and pessimistic .

But il we could all really see that God - the perfect, great omnipotent
creator and original cause 01 the whole universe - really loves us ... that "the One
who knows us best, loves us most," it would change our lives! God, whom we have wronged
the most, loves us - and has lound a way to come t o where we are .. . and lorgives us! No
person, no power, no circumstance, no situation, no station in lile, nobody's opinion - nothing ­
can ever make us leel unloved again. We are 01 value. We have been redeemed. We are totally,
unreservedly, lorever LOVED!

We can dare to love back! We can risk hurt or rejection. We can try again, and even il we lail, we
can win. We are loved by the o nly Person whose opinion ultimatel y matters. We can LOVE. We can even
love those who haven't "earned" it. Even those who reject it. Even those who don't need it. (Who's that ?!)
