Congratulations on your purchase of the Nokka Super Back Forceps. Please follow
the instructions in this manual to ensure years of trouble-free operation of your
pliers. Before you begin, you should carefully familiarize yourself with the contents
of this manual. If you have any questions, please contact your dealer or the
manufacturer directly.

1. BEFORE COMMISSIONING

MASS UNITS

In the installation and operating instructions, units of the internationally common SI

measurement system are used.

DIRECTIONS

The directions "left", "right", "front" and "rear" used in the installation and operating
instructions always refer to the direction of travel.

PRODUCTION NUMBER

Please note the production number in the place provided in the manual on page 12. In case
of inquiries and orders, model and production number must always be indicated.

SAFETY REGULATIONS

ATTENTION

The safety instructions given in this brochure are always marked with this symbol.
Please read the marked areas carefully.

1. Please familiarise yourself with the operating instructions and read the safety
regulations and the texts on the information signs carefully. Before
transferring the operation of the machine to another person, make sure that
the operator is familiar with the operating and safety instructions.
2. The operator of the machine must be at least 18 years old and healthy.
3. The operator of the machine must not be intoxicated by alcoholic, narcotic
or medical substances.
4. Remove all loose parts not belonging to the machine.
5. Attach mudguards.
6. Study all operating devices carefully.

7. During maintenance, cleaning, adjustment, assembly or storage, place and
support the pliers in such a position that they cannot move. If the back tongs
are coupled to the tractor, the handbrake must have been coupled.
8. The machine must not be modified in any way that could compromise
safety.
9. The forest trailer may only be used under working conditions and for
purposes for which it was originally designed.
10.The danger area is 20 m, make sure that nobody is in the danger area,
especially children watch.
11.Never leave the back tongs (with or without a load) so that they hang in the
air if you do not keep an eye on the back tongs yourself.
12.Do not use clothing that is too wide or torn.
13.Never go under the back tongs or the load. Only operate the tongs from the
tractor cab.
14.After the first hour of operation, check the tension of all nuts and bolts. Check
the tensions now and then later. Also check the tensions of the wheel bearings
and tyre pressures.
15.Observe possible hydraulic leaks during work. Repair errors immediately.
Do not leave oil in nature.
16. During the installation of the possible additional valves it must be taken
into account that the pressure hoses of the hydraulics must not lie
unprotected in the driver's cab.
17.Only use original spare parts.
18.The adjusting levers of the valves must be placed in the cab of the tractor.
19.Only use original extra equipment.
20.The back tongs have been planned for the local transport of timber from the
felling area to the interim storage facility. The transport during e.g. a road trip is
forbidden.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Exposure to loud noise for long periods of time can damage your hearing or
even cause complete deafness. The noise level at the workplace depends on
the sound insulation of the tractor and the way the valves are fitted. They should
therefore protect themselves against excessive noise by means of suitable
noise protection equipment.
When carrying out maintenance work on the hydraulics, use gloves to prevent oil
from getting on the skin.

ROAD TRIPS

1. When driving on the road, headlamps and equipment complying with traffic
regulations must be installed and, if necessary, switched on. The warning
triangle prescribed for tractors must also be attached.
2. The reflectors and lamps must not be dirty.
3. Please note that steering is affected by the weight of the back tongs.
4. Do not transport loads while driving on the road.

CONTROL MEASURES DURING OPERATION

If a faultless function is to be guaranteed, regular checks must be carried out on the

machine. After the first hour of operation, hoses, connections and cylinders must be
checked for oil leaks. This should also be done once in a while during operation.
If the back tongs are equipped with equipment that is not described in these
instructions, this is not part of the standard delivery program.

DESIGN CHANGES

Changes to the design of the machine may only be made with the express
permission of the manufacturer. If this is not observed, malfunctions, an impairment
of operational safety and a shorter service life must be expected.

2. THE MACHINE IN DAILY USE

The Nokka Super back tongs have been designed for short distance towing of
timber from the felling area to the intermediate storage area with the additional
equipment included in Nokka Oy's delivery programme of these back tongs.
Use for any other purpose without the permission of the manufacturer is
prohibited and will void the warranty.

CONNECT TO THE TRACTOR'S DRAWBARS

When the back tongs are in the normal position on the support leg and the tongs,
the coupling is done as follows:
1. Carefully drive the tractor backwards against the tongs and position the
drawbars so that they are at the same height as the eyelets of the tongs. Drive
the tractor backwards so that the draw pins can be adjusted. Adjust the cotter
pins in the tension bolt. Are the drawbars fitted with quick-connect couplings. If
their heads are to be attached to the drawbar eyes and the tractor is to be
driven backwards so that the heads fit into the quick coupling joints, lift up the
drawbars until the quick coupling connections are stuck. Check the locking
mechanism.

3. Pick up the back tongs, be careful with lateral swings because there is air in
the swivel cylinder that can cause an unintentional movement. Adjust the side
limiters of the tractor's lifting arms so that the back tongs are at the centre line
and lock them.
4. Lift the support leg of the back tongs of the back tongs into its upper
position and lock it there.
5. The back tongs with standard equipment. Connect the hydraulic hoses of the
tongs to the hydraulic outputs of the tractor. The control of the frame is
connected to a 2-acting valve block equipped with shock valves and a 'floating'
position. Pressing the pliers is connected to a 2-acting valve block.
6. The back tongs equipped with their own valve block (additional part). Attach the
valve block to the tractor so that the adjusting levers move freely and the
adjusting levers can be easily controlled. Hydraulic pressure hoses must not be
inserted into the tractor cab unprotected. Connect the pressure hose of the
valve block to the outlet of the single-acting valve block in the tractor and the
return hose to the free return or the pressure hose to the outlet of the lockable
position of the double-acting valve block in the tractor and the return to the
second outlet of the same valve block.
7. Make sure that the adjusting levers of the valve block are freely movable
in the middle position. Switch on the hydraulic output.
8. Make sure that there is enough space on the sides of the back tongs. There is
air in the cylinders of the back tongs, which means that especially a rotational
movement of the frame can move uncontrollably until the cylinder has been
filled with oil.
9. Move the rotating movement of the frame carefully with the hydraulics a few
times from one end position to the other so that the air escapes from the
cylinders. The same measure should also be carried out on the pressing
cylinder of the pliers.
10. 10 Check that the hydraulic hoses do not get caught too low in any working
position. Also monitor the possible adhesion of the hoses to the tractor's
construction or the back tongs. If necessary, bundle the hoses and fasten.

COUPLING THE BACK TONGS FROM THE DRAWBARS OF THE TRACTOR

1. Adjust the support leg to its lower position and close it there.
2. Fully open the jaws and lower the back tongs. Adjust the length of the
push rod so that the support leg and jaws rest on the floor.
3. Switch off the hydraulic output of the tractor, adjust the quick couplings.
4. Loosen the push rod and the drawbars from the back tongs.
5. Carefully move the tractor forwards.

WORKING WITH THE BACK PLIERS

1. When felling trees and piling up, the space requirements of the back tongs
must be observed. You have to be able to drive backwards until you reach the
pile of wood and the trailing curve has to be wide enough until you reach the
intermediate storage, especially when you have long logs on your back.
2. The back tongs are opened on the pile of wood the tongs are moved
backwards. With the front plate of the tongs the end of the wood pile can
be levelled straight (picture 1). The lifting device is lowered so that the
tongs reach under the piles of wood when closing. The tongs are closed
and the lifting device is lifted in such a way that sufficient ground
clearance remains under the trunk ends of the bundle.
3. When backing long logs, the valve block of the frame's rotating cylinder is
placed in a 'floating' position in the back tongs and the tops of the logs are
towed against the ground (Fig. 3). Long logs should not be carried completely
in the air because the cam of the tractor becomes too light and the steerability
too difficult (Fig. 4).

7. With the back tongs the plywood can be piled on a heap of the height approx. 1
- 1.2 mm depending on the lifting devices of the tractor. The load is lowered
onto a pile and the tongs are opened at the same time the lifting device is
raised.
8. When transporting an empty tong, the tong is closed and the rotary
cylinder is held in the middle position (Fig. 8).

3RD MAINTENANCE

MAINTENANCE SECURITY

The following must be observed before maintenance measures, adjustments,

cleaning procedures or the mounting of pliers and their equipment:
1. Switch off the power transmission.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Stop the engine.
4. WAIT until all parts have come to a complete standstill.
5. If the back tongs are in the trailer, the boom should be supported in such a
way that it cannot move, although the valve levers are moved.

GENERAL

Careful maintenance carried out at the right time is the best guarantee for
the functionality and service life of your pliers.
 During maintenance work, extreme cleanliness must be ensured.
 Check cylinders, hoses and connections. Leaks must be eliminated
immediately.
 Locate damage as accurately as possible. In this way you prevent further
damage and save unnecessary work.
 Always use original spare parts.
 Ensure that no hydraulic oil leaks to the ground.

LUBRICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Lubrication should be carried out daily before starting work, there are 9
lubrication points in the Nokka Super back tongs. Please use only quality
grease, e.g. NESTE OH GREASE.

HYDRAULIC

The hydraulic hoses, pipes and connections must be checked from time to time for
possible fractures and leaks. To avoid damage, replace worn or broken parts.
When servicing hydraulic components, absolute cleanliness must be ensured.
Before assembly, the hoses must be cleaned inside from dust, rubber shot and the
like.

CHANGING THE HYDRAULIC HOSE

Correctly mounted hydraulic hoses have a considerably longer service life. The
following must therefore be observed when replacing hydraulic hoses:
 Ensure that a hydraulic hose of the correct pressure class is fitted.
 Clean the inside and outside of the hose from dirt.
 Ensure that the hose is correctly installed and that it can move freely during all
working movements.
 Ensure that the hose is not twisted as this will significantly reduce the life of
the hose.
 After assembly, the hose connections must be checked for their density.

INSURANCE

If the pliers are not used for a longer period of time, they must be stored properly
as this prevents impairment of function and helps to maintain their value. Before
storage, the pliers must be thoroughly cleaned. Damaged areas must be painted.
Grease all lubrication points. Brush hard-to-reach areas that cannot be painted or
lubricated with lubricant. The pliers should be stored in a dry, cool place.
Before cleaning, switch off the hydraulics, switch off the tractor engine and adjust
the booms so that they cannot sink during storage.

FORTSCHAFTEN OF THE MACHINE FROM USE

 Be careful when disassembling the machine.

 Ensure that the dismantled parts and the oil are delivered to appropriate
collection points.
