Assignment 1
Submission Date and Time -- March 22, 2019. @ 12 noon

1. Prove that the actual velocity of a flow measured using a Pitot-static tube can be
calculated from

𝜌𝑓
V = C√2𝑔ℎ ⁄𝜌

Where V= flow velocity at the measuring point

h =manometer reading
ρ = density of measured fluid
ρf = density of manometer fluid
g = gravitational acceleration
c = correction coefficient, defined as actual velocity divided by theoretical velocity

2. Gasoline at 20oC is pumped through a smooth 12-cm-diameter pipe 10 km long,

at a flow rate of 330 gal/min. the inlet is fed by a pump at an absolute pressure of
24 atm. The exit is at standard atmospheric pressure and is 150 m higher. Estimate
2
the frictional lead loss hf and compare it to the velocity head of the flow 𝑉 ⁄(2𝑔).
Relative density of the oil at 200C is 0.68,
