EXPERIMENT 6

ABSTRACT
The waste renewable energy source has become a priority in the waste treatment field. The
research goal is not only the wastes destruction but also a better thermal energy recovery from
the process. Thermogravimetric analysis or thermal gravimetric analysis is a method of thermal
analysis in which the mass of the sample is measured over time as the temperature changes. The
purpose of this study to carry out experimental study and simulation on the thermal degradation
characteristics of MSW fractions. The food waste such as bread and the garden trimming such as
dry leaves were used as sample in this experiment. The temperature that was used is 900˚C.

INTRODUCTION
Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is a thermal analysis technique used to determine the
degradation of the sample based on the mass change as a function of temperature under nitrogen
atmosphere.
The decomposition profiles of the samples at the different temperatures are dependent on their
sample structure. For example, hemicellulose in plant structure is easy to decompose at low
temperature due to its structure, which is amorphous and rich in branches. However, for
macromolecule of lignin is made up of phenolic, carbonyl groups and aromatic rings, making
these structures degrade at high temperature only

OBJECTIVE
To determine the thermal degradation characteristics of MSW fractions.
