The Imperative

There are three forms of the imperative-


tu, nous, and vous
Rules
1. The regular forms of the imperative are taken from the tu, nous, and vous forms of the
present tense, but the tu form does not end in s
-er verbs -ir verbs -re verbs
Tu form Cesse Établis Rends
Nous form Cessons Établissons Rendons
Vous form Cessez Établissez Rendez

2. Irregular verbs follow the above rule with the exception of the following
Tu form Nous form Vous form
Aller va allons allez
Avoir aie ayons ayez
Être sois soyons soyez
Savoir sache sachons sachez
Vouloir veuillez

3. When you tell someone to do something, object pronouns are placed after the verb and
linked to it by hyphens
e.g. assieds-toi allons-y parlez-moi
The pronouns me and te change to moi and toi when they are used after the verb
