Significance of the research

The significance of this study is meant to be a medium for identifying whether one’s
knowledge of the solfege system, having it be the Fixed- Do or Movable- Do applies to the
aural skills of a music student. The information of solfege has been in use since the early
days of the 11th century and it has been applied in the use of nurturing one’s sight reading
skills. The study that has been conducted is sought to preview the contributions of the
following technique as the difference between two different approaches of applying solfege
in the aural sector of a music student is being stimulated to show whether a difference would
be recorded. The discoveries that would be found in this study would add in contribution,
including a significant amount of information to the current studies linking to the topics
regarding the application of solfege system.

Holmes’s study focuses on the in-depth study of whether the solfege system of movable-do
and fixed-do affects the advancement of a 7- and 8-year old’s sight-singing skills. This
specific study questions the effects that are made through different approaches of pedagogy.
To achieve the result of this study, Holmes conducted an experiment with the participation of
two separate experimental groups with different with different settings and variables.
