Padre Hernando de la Sibyla - He is a dominican friar and the parish priest of binondo.

A former
professor of San Juan de Letran college. He is short and has fair skin and was instructed by an old priest
in his order to watch Crisostomo Ibarra.

El fili:

Vice-rector of UST, Padre Sibyla is extremely religious and conservative. Most of his decisions are
influenced by his loyalty to the school and because of this, his choices conflict with the students and
with priests of different orders. He looks down on almost everyone, and often complains about his
tenants, the students and other Indios. He is resentful of the Jesuits (Chapter 11) and views Dominicans
as superior to them. Padre Sibyla often uses his position as Vice-rector to his advantage. He manages to
convince Capitan General to revive the Superior Commission to delay the petition for the Academy for
Spanish (Chapter 15), and when the students have dinner to celebrate the results, he sends a spy to
watch them. It is not confirmed, however, if Padre Sibyla is the one responsible for the poster incident.

Padre Bernardo Salvi - A franciscan curate of San diego which was secretly harboring lust for Maria
Clara. He is very thin and sickly. It is hinted that his last name "salvi" means salvation and can also mean
"salvaje" meanining bad hinting to the fact that he is willing to kill an innocent child (Crispin) just to get
his money back, even if there were no sufficient evidences that the kid has stolen his 2 onzas.
Represents an immoral and coward friar. Disclosed to Maria Clara the secrets of Father Damaso.

for Spanish.

Padre Damaso Vardolagas- Franciscan and the god father of Maria Clara. He is the former parish priest
of san diego. Raped Maria Clara's mother Dona Pia. He is the biological father of Maria Clara. He had a

Padre Manuel Martin – from the Order of St Augustine came to the town of San Diego just to give his
sermon or to conduct the mass after the procession (In preparation for the town’s fiesta). Delivered his
speech well to impress the crowd (delivered his speech in spanish) but was later on astounded by Padre
Damaso’s speech because it was better than what he delivered.
