A shaft is a rotating machine
component that transmits
power
Its an integral to any mechanical system in which power is
transmitted from a prime mover, such as an electric motor or
‘an engine, to other rotating parts of the system.
Example: gear-type speed reducers, belt drives, chain drives,
‘conveyors, pumps, fans, agitators, etc.

‘Why shaft design? Shaft materials/ size (diameter)?
‘Why not shaft with a constant diameter throughout?
Strength/ Rigidity requirement is different at various

You're the designer — To design a shaft for speed
reducer:
+ How are the gears and other components to be located?
‘+ How is power transmitted from gears to shaft?
+ What forces and torque are transmitted in shaft?
+ What are the minimum acceptable diameters for the shaft
to ensure safe operation?
+ What would be the final diameter ofthe shaft (after
considering dimensional specifications, tolerances and
matching elements)?

Propose reasonable geometries and supports for shafts to
carry various types of power-transmitting elements, such
as gears, bets, or/and chains
+ Apply the shaft design procedure to determine diameters,
‘of shaft at key point(s); design equation (for strength) to
resist the combination of torsional stress and bending
stress (ANSIASME B106.1M - 1985)
+ Specify reasonable final shaft dimension for each point of
shaft that satisfy strength requirements, dimension, and
installation consideration that are compatible with the
‘matched elements mounted on the shafts
