QUESTION 1
(a) Figure Q1(a) shows a frame structure that is used to support a 500 N load. Determine:
(i) the reactions at B and C, [3 marks]
(ii) the internal loadings acting on the cross section at sections a-a. [2 marks]
Note: the contact at E is smooth.

QUESTION 2
Figure Q2 shows a structure that consists of rigid bar CD that is originally horizontal. The bar is
supported by pins and 6 mm diameter steel rods CF and GH. If the vertical load of 20 kN is applied at
A of rod AB which is also 6 mm in diameter, determine:
(i) the normal stress in rods AB, CF, and GH, [8 marks]
(ii) the vertical displacement of point G. [2 marks]
Use Esteel = 200 GPa.

QUESTION 3
A 5-m steel shaft rotating at 2 Hz has 60 kW applied at gear B that is 2 m from the left end where 20
kW is removed. At the right end, 20 kW is removed and another 20 kW leaves the shaft at 1.5 m from
the right end.
(i) Calculate the uniform shaft diameter so that the shearing stress is not to exceed 60 MPa.
[5 marks]
(ii) If a uniform shaft diameter of 100 mm is specified, determine the total angle of twist of
the shaft in between A and D. [5 marks]
Use G = 83 GPa.
