Screw Load Capacity and Spacing Requirements
Load carrying capacities of screws should be based on the
criteria outlined inthe Center for Cold-Formed Steel Struc-
tures (CCFSS) Technical Bulletin, Vol.2,No. 1, dated Febru-
ary 1993, or based on manufacturer's data with an appropriate
safety factor. ‘The information ineluded in the Technical
Bulletin will be included in future editions of the AISI Speci
fication for Cold-Formed Steel Struétural Members (AIST
Specification). Table 3 contains sme screw vapacitis based
‘on the CCFSS Technical Bulletin
‘A minimum dimension of3 times nominal serew diameter (d)
should be maintained tothe edge of the steel and to the center
of other fasteners for steel to steel connections. ‘The edge
tance may be reduced to 15d in the direction perpendicular
to the Toad. Connectors for gypsum wallboard and plywood
should note spaced ess than’ from the edges or ends of the
bboard. Additional fastener spacing criteria for gypsum board
and plywood can be found in the Gypsum Asiociation pe
fication (GA-216) and the American Plywood Association's
Design and Construction Guide/Residential and Comy ~
(E-30), respectively. Contact the manufacturer for
spacing requirements for other materials.
Driving Techniques for Selt-Drilling Scrows
Screws are typically installed with hand-held por
guns that operate on pneumatic or electrical power
