Assignment # 2

CULVERT DESIGN

1. It is required to design a R.C. Box culvert to drain an area of 71.2 acres. The discharges calculated
according to 10-year and 100-year frequency are 3.7 and 6.27 m3/sec, respectively. The road cross section
at the crossing and the equivalent cross section of the natural stream can be assumed as shown in the
figure, where the bed slope is So = 23 cm/km and n = 0.02, and the normal water depths corresponding to
Q10 and Q100 are 1.55 m and 1.85 m, respectively.

2. It is required to design a steel pipe culvert to drain an area of 77 acres. The discharges in the stream
calculated according to the 10- year and 100- year frequency are 4.02 and 6.8 m3/sec, respectively. The
corresponding normal water depths are 1.18 and 1.56 m. The bed slope of the stream = 8 cm/km with
Manning coefficient = 0.025.
