WORLDWIDE ENGINEERING EN ley Na teh) Test Method Materials GMWw3208 Rotary Abrasion Test, Taber Type 4 Scope This standard is used to determine abrasion resistance of materials using a rotary platform tester. Note: Nothing in this standard applicable laws and regulations. Note: In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall take precedence supersedes 2 References Note: Only the latest approved standards are applicable unless otherwise specified 2.4 External Standards/Specifications. None 2.2 GM Standards/Specifications. emwa221 3 Test Equipment 3.4. Taber Rotary Type Abrasion Tester, or equivalent. 3.2 Vacuum. Must have sufficient suction to remove particles during the test. 3.3 Weights supplied by abrasion tester manufacturer shall be added to the arm spindle, if necessary, to achieve the total required mass specified. If a mass is labeled 500 g, that is the total mass applied to the test specimen when the weight is added to the arm spindle. Table 1: Possible Mass Combinations: ‘Arm Spindle | Ne Added Weight 2509 | = 250g ‘Arm Spindle | plusweight labeled 500g | = 500g ‘Arm Spindle | plus weight iabeies 10009 | = 1000 g Note: Each rotating platform has two arm spindles. ‘The weight specified in the material specification is, the weight required on each of the two arm spindles individually. If the material specification requires 1000, each arm spindle individually must be 10009 (250g arm spindle +7509 weight). Each 750g weight is actually labeled 1000 g. The weight is labeled to indicate the total weight after having been placed on the arm spindle, 3.4 Apparatus for conditioning to the appropriate requirements as described in GMW3221, unless othenwise specified in the relevant materials specification, 4 Test Material 4.1 One-hundred fifty (150) grit silicon carbide sandpaper supplied by Taber Ind. as S-11, or equivalent. 4.2 Abrasion wheels, as supplied by Taber Ind., as required in the applicable material specification. 5 Test Method 5.1 Summary of Test Method. A test specimen ‘abraded using @ dual, opposing, circular, rubbing action with a prescribed abrasive and a prescribed weight. The test specimen mounted on a platform, tums on a horizontal axis, against the sliding rotation of two abrading wheels. The abraded area of the test specimen is evaluated visually. 5.2 Test Sample Preparation. 5.2.1. A minimum of three test specimens shall be Cut to the dimensions specified in the material specification following sampling guidelines specified 5.2.2 The hole diameter must be within +1 mm of the spindle diameter and shall be cut in the exact center of each test specimen. Do not fold the specimen to locate the exact center. A template may be used to overlay on the specimen to locate the center. 5.2.3 Follow mounting instructions in the material specification if itis not possible to use the standard mounting card. 5.2.4 Unless otherwise specified in the relevant material specification, condition test specimens for a minimum of 24h to the requirements of GMW3221 Code A, 5.3 Test Procedure. 5.3.1 Install the specified abrasion wheels and additional weights, if necessary, as required in the equipment material specification. {© Copyright 2007 General Motors Corporation All Rights Reserved May 2007 (Originating Deparment: North American Engineering Standards Page 1 of 3 GMW3208 ‘GM WORLDWIDE ENGINEERING STANDARDS 5.3.2 The abrasion wheels shall be resurfaced, using sandpaper prior to each test. The sanding disk shall be used for 50 cycles maximum for the same wheel type Resuriace the wheel for a minimum of 25 cycles or until the original color of the wheel is restored 5.3.3 Adjust the vacuum setting to the maximum power setting of 100 unless otherwise specified 5.3.4 Clamp the sample in the hokler so that the test specimen is smooth and wrinke-ree. Next install the flange, then the retaining nut. Lastly, install the retaining ring and tighten to be snug. Do not make the ring so snug that it causes the specimen to buckle. 5.3.5 Slowly lower the abrasion wheels gently on the test specimen. 5.3.6 Adjust the height of the vacuum nozzle so it does not touch the test specimen and is a 5.3.7 Abrade the test specimen for the prescribed number of cycles. Based on different geographic ragions, the rotating platfoms may rotate at 60:5 rpm or they may rotate at 7045 rpm. For some materials, it may be possible that either rate of rotation may be specified in the material specification if it is known to affect the wear test results. 5.3.8 Remove the test specimen. Note: Fabrics shall not be cleaned or vacuumed prior to evaluation. 6 Evaluation and Rating 6.1 Ignoring the inner and outer approximately 2mm of the abraded area and using a 10X magnifier, evaluate the remainder of the abraded area 6.2 Assign a rating from the table below, which most closely describes the abraded area. Table 2: Rating Class | Definition 10 | No change 9 ‘a __| Slight change - Only detectable upon lose visual examination 7 g | Moderate change - Noticeable change from original 5 4__| Sianificant change from original that would be considered objectionable. 3 2 | Severe change — Destructive abrasion that would include wearing through the surface 1 7 Report Report the abrasion rating assigned to the test specimens and submit the specimens with the test report. Report the revolutions per minute of the rotaling platforms for the machine thal was used for testing 8 Safety This standard may invoWve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment, This standard does not Propose fo address all the safely problems esociated with its use.
