ACTIVITY 4

Familiarization with Phlebotomy Materials

Phlebotomy Chair

- should be comfortable for

the patient
- have adjustable armrests
• Phlebotomy tray or cart
– Store equipment needed for most procedures
– Keep well-stocked
• Gloves
– Sterile and non-sterile
– Powder-free
• Hand sanitizers
– Use when no visible
contamination is present
• Alcohol prep pads
– Clean the site
– Not recommended for some
tests
– Ask patient if allergic to alcohol
• Gauze pads
– Loosely woven fabric
– Applied after procedure is complete
• Adhesive bandages
– Placed over puncture
site
– Not used on children
under 2 years
• Sharps container
– For needles and other sharps
• Tissue warmers
– Heel warmer
– Warm towel or cloth
• Computer label/permanent marking pen
– After drawing blood
– Before leaving patient
• Specimen transport bags
• Tourniquet
– Temporarily
stops blood flow
– Used to locate
veins easily

Never apply a tourniquet for

longer than 1 minute.
Vein-locating Devices
Needles
• Needle parts
– Hub
– Shaft
– Bevel
– Needlestick
prevention device
• Some brands color-code
gauge size
• Sterility safety label
• Sterility expiration date
Multiple-Sample Needles
• Double-pointed needle
• Part of evacuated collection system
Hypodermic Needles/Syringes
• Hypodermic needles
– Used with a syringe to draw blood
– Blood transferred to evacuated tube
• Syringes
– Barrel
– Plunger
Winged Infusion Set
• Patients with small or fragile veins
• Wings provide stability
Evacuated Tube Holder
• Holds needle and
tube
• Dispose of with
needle after use
Evacuated Collection Tubes

• Premeasured vacuum
• Some contain additives
• Some have splash guards
Additives and Vacuum (LO 7.4)
• Cap color identifies additive in tube
• Solid caps
– Regular vacuum

• Translucent caps
– Reduced vacuum
Nonadditive Tubes

• Most nonadditive plastic

tubes
• used for clearing or discard
purposes only.
Syringe Transfer Device
- allows the safe transfer of blood into
the tubes without using the syringe
needle or removing the tube stopper
- after a syringe draw is completed,
the needle safety device is activated
and the needle is removed and
discarded into a sharps container
- the transfer device is then attached
to the hub of the syringe
- an ETS tube is placed inside it and
advanced onto the needle until blood
flows into the tube.
Microcollection Equipment

Lancets Capillary Tubes Microcollection

And Sealant Tubes
Microcollection Tubes
• Colors and additives generally the same as
those for evacuated tubes
• Two variations
– Available in red, gold, green, mint green, and
lavender only
– Gold and mint green available with amber tubes
