Problem Set
TORQUE
Solve the following problems analytically. Strictly no erasures/alterations.

1. A uniform horizontal beam with a length of 9.00 m and a weight of 250 N is attached to a
wall by a pin connection. Its far end is supported by a cable that makes an angle of 54.0° with
the beam. If a 630-N person stands 2.10 m from the wall, find the tension in the cable as well
as the magnitude and direction of the force exerted by the wall on the beam.

2. Workers have loaded a delivery truck in such a way that its center of gravity is only slightly
forward of the rear axle, as shown in the drawing. The mass of the truck and its contents is
7460 kg. Find the magnitudes of the forces exerted by the ground on a.) the front wheels and
b.) the rear wheels of the truck.

Given:
3. A wrecking ball weighing 4800 N is supported by a boom, which may be assumed to be
uniform and has a weight of 3600 N. As the drawing shows, a support cable runs from the
top of the boom to the tractor. The angle between the support cable and the horizontal is ,
and the angle 32o between the boom and the horizontal is 48o . Find a.) the tension in the
support cable and b.) the magnitude of the force exerted on the lower end of the boom by
the hinge at point P.
Given:

4. A vaulter holds a 29.4-N pole in equilibrium by exerting an upward force U with her leading hand and
a downward force D with her trailing hand, as shown infigure below. Point C is the center of gravity
of the pole. What are the magnitudes of U and D?
