the Actor & the Biz | MEMORIZATION TECHNIQUE

STEP 1:
Using RED pen and both Capital and lowercase letters, write down the first
letter of every word. Make sure to include the punctuation, exactly as written.

"If this is the line, this is the way you memorize it."

I t i t l, t i t w y m i.

Here is a more complex example from The Fisher King.

...So he says to me, "You'll never find another man like me"...I said, "Please,
men like you have one hand on their dicks and the other hand on their mother's
leg... I said, “There's the door - take a trip.”

...S h s t m, “y n f a m l m”...I s, “p, m l y h o h o t d a t o h o t m l”...

I s, “t t d - t a t.”

STEP 2:
Read the letters and say your line out loud. Look back at the line when you can't
remember the word.

STEP 3:
Cover the line and just read the letters, going back to the line if needed. But
take a moment first to try to recall it.

STEP 4:
Drill it a few times and instantly, you will remember it!

FINAL NOTES:
Ÿ Red Pen is key. Green works too.

Ÿ A yellow legal pad is ideal for monologues or if your sides are monologue
heavy. For some scientific reason, the eye retains the information best when on
yellow but white paper also works.

Ÿ I usually write the letters on the right side of the script. The perk here is that
during auditions, you can pick the red letters up in a millisecond while grabbing
your next line!

Let me know how it goes.
