FOREWORD oa “This specification is issued under the fixed Serial No. M.39, the final ‘number indicates the year of original adoption as standard, or in the case of revision, the year of last revision, ADOPTED 1968: REVISED 2001 02 “This specification is isued to facilitate assessment and procurement of wire and flux by Indian Railways for welding of structural stecls in place of existing IRS M: 39.68. 03 in calice IRS:M-39, wire-fhux combinations were taken into consideration. In this version, wire and fx bave been delinked to the extent that approval and procurement of both can be done separately. oa Im earlier specification, the impact value of weld deposit of wire fx ‘combinations was specified at 27 + 2'C. During this span of 32 years, Indien Railways has inttoduced many fast moving trains like Rajéhani and Shatabdi Express and expanded its networkin colder regions. Occasionally eracks are being reported in the welded area. To combat this, minimum impact value requirement of the weldment has been specified at 20°C in this specification. os In this specification, three-more grades have been added for joining high tensile steels, steels to ASTM 516 Gr. 70 and weather resistant steels to IRS M-4I 242, All the grades have been made suitable for two run and multirun welding ‘Radiographic quality has been made mandatory forall the grade. 06 In Teble-! of this specifiation, reference has been made to MMAW leetzodes of IRS M-28-2001 in Column 4. This has been provided for direct co- relation and interchangeabily o7 08 09 o0 10 20 24 Packing conditions for both wire and flux lave been incorporated in Clause 44 and 5.6. The same has been kept as requirement of acceptance aso. ‘In faming this specification, guidance from the following specifications has ‘been taken: (@ 18:3613-1993 (Acceptance tess for wire-fx combinations for ‘Submerged Are Welding). (i 18:7280-1997 (Bate wire lectrodes for Submerged Are Welding of Structural steels). ii) AWS-AS.17-1977 (Bare Carbon steel electrodes and fx for Submerged ‘Are Welding), jv) AWS-A5.23-1990 (Low alloy tee electrodes and fluxes for Submerged ‘Are Welding). Wherever reference to any other standard appears in this specification, it shal be taken asa reference tothe latest version of that standard, For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis shall be rounded off in accordance with 1S: 2-1960 “Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)". The number of significant places retained in the rounded off values shall be the same as that ofthe specified value in this standard ‘Scope: ‘This standard lays down the classification, acceptance requirements and procedure for selection and testing of different grades of wire and flux fanufactured indigenously for the use on Indian Railways. Manufacturer means the indigenous unit manufacturing the Submerged ‘Are Welding fluxes, wires oF wire-lox combinations. A manufacturer must have ‘complete infrastructure required for production along with quality control facilites. All the fecilities must be located in single premises under its ownership dedicated for production of subject items.
