Ranked Choice Voting

Statement of Problem (with Electoral College)

In most states, the electors put all their state’s

votes toward the winner of the popular vote of their
state. Under this system, there are many problems.

1. each voter votes for the one candidate of their

choice and the popular vote of a state wins it.
2. the “voters” themselves aren’t actually electing
a candidate directly. The group of Electors
elect the candidate who are composed of two
senators + the # of representatives.
New System Description

With our system, each voter ranks each candidate from 1

(being the best) to the largest number (being the worst).

1. The lowest ranking gets a single vote.

2. the number of votes ascends with the rankings.
3. The number of votes for every candidate is
combined to give them a final amount.
4. Candidate with most votes wins.

Reasons for Replacement (PROS)

➢ Provides an outcome
more reflective of the
majority of voters than
Electoral College
➢ Provides more choice for
voters
➢ Encourages politicians to
campaign in many areas
➢ No need for Primaries
Acknowledgement of Drawbacks (CONS)

➢ It is new and may be

difficult to implement (A
certain percentage of
people don’t like
change/May be
unhappy/Might decide to not
participate)
➢ Counting ballots will be
expensive and harder
➢ Could still fail to get a
candidate with a majority
➢ With less candidates, there
are higher risks of ties
Closing Statement

Many countries have voting systems similar to

this and those countries tend to have better voter
turnout than other countries.
Voters can also be happier with the campaign
process and election results.
