Calculation of Chemical Feed Capacity for Ash Water Treatment System

1．General description
The ash water settling pond is arranged in northwest corner of ash
yard. The rockfill dam which has filtering capability to remove SS in ash
water is arranged around the side of ash water settling pond by ash yard
side. The steel gates are settled in the inlet and outlet of ash water settling
pond. The ash water is not discharged in normal time but removed by
natural evaporation, and the operating people periodical inspection. When
the time need to discharge ash water the operating people shall open the
inlet steel gate and lead the ash water which has been removed SS by
rockfill dam into the ash water settling pond. Then the operating people
shall test the PH value of the ash water, if PH value is 6~9 which can
meet the discharge standard, the outlet steel gate shall be opened and
discharge the ash water into the sea nor the acid/alkali shall be inject in
the ash water to adjust the PH value until it can meet the discharge
standard and then open the outlet steel gate and discharge the ash water
into the sea.
2．Calculation
The PH value of ash water which is affected by ash is usually weak
alkaline.
Base on the chemical equation: H+ + OH- ֖ H2O；
The PH value of ash water is supposed as 11 and the PH value of
treated ash water as 7.
The ash water shall be treated time and again. The ash water settling
pond design size is 11m×10.5m×1.8m and the volume is about 200m3.
It is supposed that the ash water shall not be treated until the ash water
settling pond is full filled, and the treated quantity is 200m3 every time.
While it is required HCl=200m3×10-3mol/L×36.5g/mol =7300g =
7.3kg to adjust the PH value of 200m3 ash water from 11 to 7. If the
industrial HCl used to adjust PH value is supposed as 30% concentration
and 1.15 kg/L density, it is required 30%HCl=7.3 kg÷30%÷1.15 kg/L
≈21L.
