A 7,4 Richter scale earthquake followed by tsunami and liquefaction had shaken Palu, the capital

city of Central Celebes on September 28th 2018 wiped out a thousand people, houses, and a half of public
spaces.

In order to survive, people had to move to refugee place where they continue to make a living by
set up tents, cooking in the soup kitchen and urinate in the public toilet. They also formed a small
contemporary community.

Our main focus is in Mpanau village, Sigi. Apparently, all of those small acts to survive by these
victims still not sufficient for the society itself, till we find out the main problem is to create a space that
can be utilized by the youth and the children to keep support they psychological aspects after the disaster
or so called as trauma healing. To solve this problem we need to create something which can be utilized
as a multipurpose space such as a playground, sports, gathering space and all of activities to support any
kind of necessity these people need for trauma healing. Basically, this village have a traditional communal
space called Bantaya.

So, we initiate to design a community center based in the refugee place itself. We have
acknowledge much more about bamboo since we collaborate with one of magister student from ITB in
built a public facilities and emergency shelter which really affect our community center design later.

We applied design and build methods as a guide in this project and also directly intervene the
development process, start from selecting materials, clean-up the site, until the construction phase. The
funds that we had obtained come from open donation we held for two weeks.

The community center consider efficiency and locality. The main material is bamboo and shingle
which aimed to support local material sellers. To ease the construction process we use bamboo modular
frame system and peg as a join, other than that, we also use rattan as a tie methods to strengthen each
bamboo connection.

Community center have been used for several activities such as trauma healing space, volunteer
creative activities, children’s play room and sports room, etc.

By building this community center we hope that architecture can contribute to the community
and help in the recovery of trauma for the most affected people in this village by providing a shared forum
to carry out positive activities that can rebuild the shared spirit after the disaster.
