I met Kliment a few years ago in a Russian teahouse in Coney Island. When he found out I was from Paris he asked me what I thought about the Auber suburban train station. He told me it was the most beautiful and depressing place he had ever seen.

All rights reserved I never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude Henry David Thoreau I met Kliment a few years ago in a Russian teahouse in Coney Island. A common friend introduced us and when he found out I was from Paris he asked me what I thought about Auber station on RER line A. I just looked at him in amazement and told him that it was where I realized what I really wanted to do with my life. He told me it was the most beautiful and de- pressing place he had ever seen.
Kliment had spent a year in Paris on a
writing scholarship. Not speaking a word of French, lost in a city that did not under- stand him, he often wandered in the sub- way and RER corridors. He said he found some kind of melancholic comfort there, a silent communion with thousands of passengers, thousands of lonesome strangers brushing past one another, gazing at each other, keeping each other warm in the coldness of life. This is when the photos in this book were taken. Kliment was looking for answers, friends, a place to call home… and he found solitudes.
