Preface
Purpose This document describes how to manage Signaling System NQ7
(SS7) standard functions using the SS7 Management Graphical User
Interface (GUI). Standard SS7 functions are provided by the ATCA-
based Common Platform of Alcatel Net- work Elements (NEs), and
enable NE operators and administrators to perform day-to-day SS7
management tasks.
This guide applies to Alcatel ATCA-based Common Platform releases
beginning with Release MD5.
The use of Advanced SS7 functions is beyond the scope of this document.
Terminological conventions The following terminological conventions are used in this document:
The terminology used is that specified by the International
Telecommunica- tion Union Telecommunication standardization
sector (ITU-T) and European Telecommunications Standards
Institute (ETSI) standards.
Procedures described in this guide are performed using a
mouse. "Click" means use the left mouse button. "Right-click"
means use the right mouse button.
This document uses abbreviations developed from the English
extended form when available. Certain abbreviations may be
French-based when no English extended form exists.
5ignaling Link 5ets A signaling Link Set is a group of 1 to 16 signaling links. All
links in a Link Set share the following common characteristics:
same error correction
method, same adjacent
point code.
When you add a new signaling link to a Link Set you increase the
transmission capacity of the Link Set.
In normal operation, links share the signaling load. If necessary, any
single link can carry the full load. Each signaling link that connects to
an adjacent SP is clearly identified by an SLC. The link should have
the same SLC at each of the 2 end points of the signaling network.
1•1•3 About Route 5ets
Routes sets contain from 1 to 4 Link Sets. Traffic distribution across
Link Sets within a Route Set is determined by a load sharing rule.
Note: 0nce a Route Set is created it can be deleted but not modified.
Load sharing Load sharing between link sets in a Route Set is a method
according to which the total signaling load on a Route Set is shared
between 2 or more working signaling link sets. The choice of the load
sharing rule depends on the number of signaling link sets in the
Route Set.
The SCCP point code provides support for both connection and
connectionless mode SCCP services.
All the Point Codes in the same Logical Network have the same
length (14 or 24 bits) and the same Network Indicator
(National/International).
Narrowband and broadband networks are defined in different Logical
Networks.
1•2 Functional dependencies
1•2•1 About dependencies
Due to functional dependencies, SS7 components should be created
and config- ured in a particular sequence. Because some components
"depend" upon the existence of other components they cannot be
created until the prerequisite com- ponents have been created and
configured.
Note: Although Advanced SS7 functions are beyond the scope of this
document, much of the information in this chapter refers to
Advanced functions because it is helpful to understand how all
components operate together in the SS7 system.

Broadband connection
dependencies
To create a broadband Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Virtual Circuit (VC) connection you
need to configure an ATM device profile.
Because the ATM device connection depends upon certain functional components, the ATM
connection profile should be defined in a particular configuration se- quence. See the SS7
management key procedures in Chapter 2.
Figure 2 illustrates broadband dependencies. In the figure, arrows point from objects that
depend upon objects the arrow points toward.
Locking/unlocking SCCP
local subsystem
A local SCCP subsystem can be locked or unlocked:
by operator commands (by modifying the 5tatus parameter in SCCP Access Point
management),
by the application (primitive upper layer N-STATE request). The operator can override this if
required.
The SS7 Management GUI provides two modes
