Fewer injuries in girls' sports when high schools have athletic trainers-July 19,2018

1. Access to an Athletic Trainer in high school reduces the risk of injury and re-injury

overall in girls’ sports such as soccer and basketball. Schools that have access to athletic

trainers also are better in identifying athletes with concussions. Only about one-third of

high schools have access to a full-time athletic trainer. Concussion rates are lower in

schools that don’t have access to a full-time athletic trainer. This could possibly be

because students don’t have anyone to go to assess their injury. Many coaches who are

around certified athletic trainers know the signs and symptoms of concussions and are

more likely to remove their athletes if injured. Overall the rate of injuries in both girls’

soccer and basketball are higher when an athletic trainer is not present. Many school

districts are now looking into getting access to a full-time athletic trainer.

2. This article relates to my project topic because the article talks about injuries in girls’

sports. My mentor this semester is an athletic trainer who specializes in girls’ sports. My

project topic this semester is ACL injury and rehabilitation. Therefore, this article relates

to my topic because ACL injuries are more common in female athletes. This also relates

to my mentor’s career. She has been specializing in women’s sports for over a decade.

"The positive impact we observed is likely because athletic trainers are licensed

healthcare professionals who work with coaches and athletes to apply evidence-based
injury prevention strategies, and they are able to recognize and manage injuries when

they happen, which may reduce severity or complications." At our school many of the

coaches have been educated by my mentor enough to recognize when someone is hurt

and when to remove them from play due to injuries.

3. In my opinion, I feel that the article is very good. The article talks about how not many

schools have access to full-time athletic trainers, and how it affects their athletes. After

reading this article I learned that not all school athletes are fortunate enough to have

access to an athletic trainer. I feel that all schools should provide their coaches and

athletes with an athletic trainer. I feel that athletes who do not have access to an athletic

trainer at their school tend to put off injuries and hurt themselves worse. The article

doesn’t evoke any emotions in my opinion. On the other hand I believe that all athletes

should have access to an athletic trainer so that they don’t keep performing on an injury

or reinjure themselves.
