1. Age of the car: As a car ages, chances of mechanical problems tend to increase. As a result, most of the service
providers are reluctant to offer cover for cars aged above five years. And, just in case they do offer the cover, the
annual charges would be very high. Additionally, car manufacturers also provide roadside assistance packages along
with their vehicle. For example, Honda’s Roadside Assistance costs Rs 1,780 in the first year, Rs 2,950 in the second
year and Rs 3,750 after the third year.
2. Number of services available: The cover may have a cap on the number of times a service can be availed. For
example, TVS Automobile Solutions offers two types of roadside assistance packages—Gold Card and Platinum Card.
The Gold Card holders can get emergency breakdown assistance six times in a year, while, Platinum cardholders get
unlimited emergency breakdown assistance in a year.
3. Plan prices: The prices for roadside assistance depend largely on the age of the vehicle and the number of services
availed by the car owner. But another key aspect is your typical travel route. If you travel within your city, your plan
may vary from someone who has to travel inter-city frequently. For instance, Cross Roads India Assistance offers a
City Standard plan comprising six free services in a year and costing Rs 911. However, to get highway services, you
would have to take either City Premium or City Platinum plan and pay Rs 1139 and Rs 1367, respectively.
Roadside assistance is an essential aspect of your car maintenance and protection. In the unfortunate event of a breakdown or
accidents, it is of great help. If you feel your current car insurance is able to take care of such emergency requirements, you can
avoid buying a standalone policy. However, if your current car insurer does not give ample features in its add-on roadside
assistance plan, go for a standalone policy.
Indian government spends over Rs 400 crores per year on publicly financed emergency transport systems- and even
if central share goes down the net spend in the current year is likely to be more like Rs. 600 crores. It has till date
spent at least 2400 crores on these schemes. The scaling up and universalisation of access to emergency transport
systems is going to happen- it is part of the public commitment made by the prime minister, it is part of the working
group report on NRHM submitted by the ministry and it will be an important part of the 12th Five Year Plan. This
study was designed to learn from the diverse experiences on the ground to do better in future.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To describe the three main models of emergency response ambulance services and assured referral transport
mechanisms that have evolved under NRHM
2. To compare the different business models –or approach to the provision of assured referral transport and
emergency response ambulance services – that public finance has supported- for their strengths and weaknesses in
terms of:
a) Coverage, timeliness, prioritization and quality of emergency response,
b)Provision of an assured cashless transport service for pregnant women and sick newborn.
c) Costs and sustainability of the models
d) Equity of access to these services e) Outcomes- with respect to the rest of the emergency health care chain.
3. Drawing upon these studies to make recommendation to the future design of ERS and the principles of design that
could be used to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of each and adapt each of these business models to
different contexts

10. How many people use these? How big is the market?
With the number of road accidents significantly increasing and people finally realizing the importance of roadside assistance
services, almost 70% of the vehicle owners in India today, have a roadside assistance coverage plan. Even motor-vehicle sellers
are compelling all the new buyers to have a roadside assistance plan from the starting, in order to deal with mishaps.
The market is big as you can see I have mention all the details before.
11. International Markets - What defines the roadside assistance. What all is better or worse than Indian set up?
Vehicle roadside assistance is a service that assists drivers of vehicles in breakdown coverage.Roadside assistance coverage helps
drivers when their vehicle breaks down. It is an option on almost every auto insurance policy. Your car insurance company
typically partners with an existing network of businesses that provide roadside assistance services, or employs a team to contact
and arrange service on their customer’s behalf. Which service provider is sent to a driver depends entirely on their location,
vehicle, and circumstances. The closest and most appropriate service providers tend to be dispatched. Generally, adding roadside
assistance to your policy will get you: towing, battery service, flat tire service, fuel delivery, lockout service, and extrication.
It is certain that no country can afford to ignore the automobile sector, which is globally worth over $2.4 trillion and one of the
substantial contributors to the GDP of many nations. India is assumed to be an anchor of the future growth in the auto industry.
However, with the increasing demands of the automobile industry there also arise various challenges. Many new industries have
come up to mitigate those gaps in the automotive industry and roadside assistance provider is one of them. In today’s 21st
century where time is money, no productive person would want to waste their quality time in case a vehicle breaks down.
There are many roadside service provider who has gained a very good number of customers in India like K. TVS AA, Highway
Mechanic , Allianz Global Assistance etc.
For an example- Cross Roads provides breakdown assistance service and employs 500 people and offers services across 23 cities
with self-owned / managed service network. It claims to attend to over 1,200 roadside repairs everyday and says it has handled
over 3 million roadside repairs / emergencies to date.
300 On Road Assistance/Day Assistance Repair every 5 minutes recorded by crossroads roadside assistance service provider
company in India.
But there is no exact number is available by any resource available on internet who tell us about the estimated daily user but if I
take an avg of the services provided by those companies/firms ( i've listed), it comes that overall more than 2,500 cases has been
recorded daily in the Nation.
b) How many of these actually use the govt supported ambulances for the emergency care system ? Or how to
do they connect with the same?
Please go through this once to get a clear view for this question.
http://nhsrcindia.org/sites/default/files/Emergency%20Medical%20Service%20in%20India%20Concept%20Paper.pdf
By the way, there are some roadside assistance service provider companies/firms like CarDekho Company arrange help from
nearest clinic/hospital In case of any medical emergency arising during vehicle breakdown.
c) What are the services provided internationally as part of the road side assistance but are not provided in
India?
Extrication:
AAA Plus members can worry less about the cost of being stuck somewhere too. Extrication or winching - pulling a vehicle out
of somewhere or something - can be complicated and expensive. If your vehicle slides off the road and is stuck in grass, mud or a
snowbank it might take more than one service truck to pull it out. AAA Plus members get two drivers and two trucks free for the
first hour. When compared to others, this could be a huge savings. For example, if the extrication takes longer than one hour, a
State Farm Emergency Road Service member would have to pay out-of-pocket for however much time two trucks spent to
dislodge their vehicle.
Some credit cards have a roadside assistance feature that cardholders are already part of and do not need to enroll in. We’ve
broken down a couple below and determined whether or not someone with one of the cards should consider purchasing additional
roadside assistance.
American Express
AmEx provides Premium Roadside Assistance that can effectively serve as the primary and only roadside assistance service for
select cardholders. It's actually the best option aside from AAA's service, since it's complimentary for the first 4 calls you make.
Premium Roadside Assistance offers essentially the same number and quality of services that would be available to an AAA Plus
member - only there is no annual fee to the card holder. One difference is the service will only cover the cost of the first 10 miles
of towing. The card member would have to pay any expense after that out-of-pocket for towing, or any of the other services for
the first 4 incidences during the year. Here are a few examples of the cards whose members have access to Premium Roadside
Assistance:

Government Support: In the United States, many states and their Departments of Transportation have organized
government-run Highway Assistance Patrols, or Highway Safety Patrols, to keep the traffic moving and assist with highway
emergencies as needed. While not law enforcement personnel, these persons provide free service to motorists in distress, and
secure lanes of traffic, provide emergency medical assistance, request tow trucks for vehicles in inconvenient or dangerous
locations, remove debris from the roadway after a crash, and resolve minor disabled vehicle problems, such as flat tires,
jumpstarts, or pushing a disabled vehicle out of travel lanes. Many of these patrols work directly with the State Police and
Highway Operations departments of their state, and respond to assistance when a citizen calls 911 for minor roadside assistance
duties.
In some areas, especially in Europe, there is a government-sponsored or -sanctioned automobile membership association, and the
service may be in the form of an insurance policy with premiums, instead of a member subscription fee.
d) What is the avg and min time of response for each of these services?Avg cost of operations? Any profitable company in
this space?
Actually it depends on the location of site and the facility provided by the companies in that area.
For example- Zauito a roadside assistance service provider (startup company) offers roadside assistance with an average
estimated time arrival (ETA) of 20 minutes.

Sahayata Global Assistance strives to be on the spot within 30-40 minutes with the solution ready team.
So as I have given all the concerning detail before and we can see that mostly service provider takes a time to reach on the spot
within 30 to 50 minute and some takes more than 60 minute as well so after analysis we can take an avg time of 30 minute (for
minimum ETA) and 60 minute (for maximum ETA).
Avg. cost of operation- it also depend on the service provided by the companies/firm.
I would like to suggest you to go through the details I have provided before for each company.

There are many reasons why a motorist might get stranded next to these roads. It may include vehicle failure, damage caused by
factors such as potholes and road works or the numerous crashes we report on daily.
In the event of operational difficulty or unexpected emergency the motorist needs reliable service fast and efficiently. In this
section we will explore and analyse some of these options.
Additional Benefits
With emergency roadside and medical assistance becoming a rather competitive industry, we can expect to find many “add-on”
benefits offered by the different providers. For some providers roadside assistance is their main focus of business whereas for
others it may merely be an added benefit to other services they provide.
Emergency services providers differentiate themselves through the nature of services provided and the cost of such benefits.
Different levels of membership are provided as well as cover ranging from the most affordable to executive and more
comprehensive packages.
Added and enhanced benefits include:
● Emergency Overnight / Hotel accommodation for driver and passengers.
● Offering car hire and taxis to ensure the client can safely continue the journey.
● Providing emergency medical response and rescue in the event of injury.
● Medical evacuation / repatriation, admission to a medical facility, relocation after treatment, trauma counselling,
repatriation of mortal remains, free medical advice and assistance, dispatch of emergency medication or blood,
travelling companions for stranded minors, and drug and generic medicine information.
● Long distance towing.
● Motor-related legal advice and technical advice lines.
● Discounts on services and special offers on parts.
● Technical investigations of vehicles.

Terms and Conditions / Exclusions
It is the duty of the consumer to ensure that he is aware of the content of any policy or agreement to offer roadside emergency
assistance. It is important to be aware of the T’s and C’s [Terms and Conditions] as there may exclusions as to the services
rendered. These exclusions will generally differ based on the nature of the service, the frequency, time and costs thereof etc.
Nature of the Services
● Roadside assistance may exclude parts, components, keys or key cutting costs, lubricants or similar charges.
● The agreement may stipulate that additional material, parts and labour will be at your own cost.
● Very often the cost of repair of parts such as new batteries, tyres, locks, keys are excluded.
● The costs of wheel balancing after a tyre change and similar charges are likely to be excluded.
● It may exclude vehicles not registered under the Road Traffic Act or similar legislation applicable in South Africa.
● Vehicles that are not roadworthy or clearly in a state of neglect are also usually excluded.
Costs
● A limit may be stipulated by some providers to the costs of towing i.e. R500 whereas some providers may offer long
distance towing.
● A price limit is often placed on the value of hotel accommodation or car and taxi rental.
● Cost of safe storage of the vehicle is also very often set at a maximum amount.
● Cost of repatriation of the vehicle following the repair - i.e. up to a maximum of R500.
It is important for motorists to ensure that they make informed decisions and to acquaint themselves with the contractual
stipulations, terms and conditions and both the benefits and exclusions.
Conclusions:
Emergency responders always refer to the “Golden hour” after a road crash in emphasizing the need for fast and effective
medical response. With so much crime having an impact of the safety of road users there is a similar need for fast and efficient
response to protect motorists who have survived a crash or who are stuck next to the road from a vehicle breakdown!
There are many professionals able to offer roadside assistance swiftly and affordably. We will encourage road users to do their
homework before travel and to plan ahead for possible worst case scenarios to ensure that they find the assistance needed!
