ABOUT US
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as
a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support
its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite
the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many
of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers
have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard
Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan
and Daniel Kahneman.

About TEDx
In the spirit of Ideas Worth Spreading, TEDx is a local gathering that
bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TEDx events are
independent of TED events. Subject to certain rules and regulations, event
organizers design, plan, and execute the event independently. Bringing
together TED Talks video and live presentations to spark deep discussion
and connection from a personal and local as well as national and global
perspective.

Our Wonderful Team

TEDxUWMilwaukee members have thoroughly demonstrated high levels
of commitment and involvement exemplified by past conferences. The
TEDxUWMilwaukee organization exerts immense amounts of time and
energy into bringing TEDx events to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
campus and the Milwaukee community. Each member of the organization
is responsible for a portion of planning that they are most interested in,
whether that be speaker-content, marketing, outreach or production. What
excites us most as an organization is the drive our members bring to the
table when they are allowed to pursue what they are truly interested in. We
have found success through letting our members define their own roles in
furthering our mission and in streamlining our efforts as an impactful and

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
TEDxUWMilwaukee has a huge impact on UWM and the
Milwaukee community. One way that it most personally affects
students here are the student internships the students receive
through the process. Each year, students come together
and produce a world-class event that the audience is always
surprised to hear to be student-run.

One such student experience is that of our Marketing

Coordinator. For TEDxUWMilwaukee 2015, our marketing
team spent hundreds of dollars to reach out to those at UWM
and our Milwaukee community. The coordinator spent time
analyzing social media trends, preparing their artwork for
each piece of marketing, supervising a team of other students,
and coordinating campaigns to convince both speakers and
audience members to speak at and attend TEDxUWMilwaukee.

Our Finance Coordinator is in charge of our $10,000 budget

overall as well the personal relationship between all sponsors
and our organization. They monitor the level of funds, and set
up frequent meetings between organizers and sponsors to
maintain constant communication.

These are just two examples of the amazingly high-impact
learning and leadership experiences TEDxUWMilwaukee
offers to the students of UW-Milwaukee. Students have used
the work they’ve done for TEDxUWMilwaukee for their classes,
their portfolio, and on their resume. We hope you’ll join us in
helping provide the opportunity for students to tackle real-world
problems through this incredible student-run organization.
A STATEMENT FROM OUR FOUNDER

MIKE SPORTIELLO
CO-FOUNDER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Ideas need a medium. One of my favorite quotes is from Edmund Burke,

a statesman from England’s House of Commons in the 1700’s. He said
that “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men
to do nothing.” Burke used his stage as a member of parliament to
spread this notion, to call for action. TEDxUWMilwaukee’s mission, in
a sentence, is to give those a stage who don’t yet have one to make a
difference in this world.

In 2014, our first year, we gave artists and scientists the stage together.
We watched them laugh at their differences and stand agape at their
similarities. One scientist, a physics professor of UW-Milwaukee by
the name of Patrick Brady, told us the story of Einstein’s last unproven
prediction: the existence of gravitational waves. He filled the audience
with awe and wonder at the vastness of science and the universe. This
January, a press conference was held at our university to announce that
in an international collaboration, of which he was part, scientists had
come together to prove Einstein’s theory.

6
Another speaker by the name of Bryan Cera was an alumnus of UW-
Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts. He built robots that did nothing.
He built them for the sole purpose of procrastination. By the end of his
talk, the audience members were all holding their sides with laughter.
TED picked his talk as one of the top 15 talks in the world for the month
of November 2014. Two years later, the videos from all of our speakers
have tens of thousands of views, and we’ve sold out every major event
we’ve ever put on.

By sponsoring TEDxUWMilwaukee, you aren’t only impacting the tens

of thousands of people in Milwaukee, you’re proudly declaring your
commitment to the power of ideas and building a stage with us. You’re
part of the medium by which we enact positive change in this world.

TESTIMONIALS

“As an academic, I’m used to presenting my work to the handful

of experts in my field—never to hundreds of laypeople. But
the TEDxUWMilwaukee organizers helped me to convey my
thoughts in a way that was clear and engaging. With their help,
I was able to reach a much larger audience than I normally
could. It was really exciting to get through to so many people—
and, hopefully, to make a difference in their lives.”
— Dan Sportiello, Philosophy Fellow

“Professional, smart, organized, generous - a great team

to work with. The scheduled critique sessions with other
presenters were a real boon - my talk was that much better,
and I now have some amazing, great friends in my fellow
TEDxers.”

— Nathaniel Stern, Associate Professor of Arts and Tech

“The TEDxUWMilwaukee team was extremely helpful in

providing feedback and insight as I prepared my talk. I highly
recommend the TEDxUWMilwaukee team for assisting in the
development and delivery of an effective TEDx message.”
— Andrew Williams, Director of Humanoid Engineering and Intelligent Robotics
