Spoon

Test tube and test tube cap

Test tube stand

Nitrogen reading chart

Procedures (past tense)

Stage one: Preparing the filtering device

The green cap on the filtering device was unscrewed and the lounger was removed. One of the filter
paper was placed into the bottom of the plunger. A neat fit was ensured by using the end of the spoon.

Stage Two: Filtering the nutrients

The barrel of the filtering device was filled to 5ml with dry and crumble soil from Keys beach. 2.0ml of P1
solution was added to the barrel. The plunger was inserted just inside the barrel of the filtering device
and was gently shaken for 30 seconds. The plunger was pressed down slowly until it touched soil
solution in the barrel. The cap was placed on the filtering device and screwed down slowly until the
solution filtered from the barrel into the plunger inside was seen. The filtering device was held on a 45-
degree angle which helped to relieve the resistance of the plunger. When adequate solution was in the
plunger, the cap was unscrewed and removed from the filtering device. The solution was poured from
the plunger into the test tube to the 1 ml mark.

Stage Three: Potassium Test

5ml of the K2 solution was added to the test tube. The solution stood for 5 minutes then a reading was
taken. The test tube was uncapped and the color was immediately taken by putting the tube on the
circle printed next to comparison chart. The solution had a degree of cloudiness because of the
potassium present. The test tube was placed in the circle printed under the black and dotted rectangles
in the Potassium reading chart. The test tube was placed on the highest reading and moved down the
chart until one of the boxes is visible.
