WHY SHOULD WE SUPPORT FEDERALISM?

In a country where power of the government lies in the hands of those at the
topmost part of the system, why shouldn’t we implement federalism?
The Philippines presently has a democratic republican state. The presidential
form of the government is divided into three branches, namely, the executive,
legislative and the judicial. The executive is the one that carries out the laws that are
made by the legislative and evaluated by the judicial branch of the government.
The republican state allows greater freedom to the nation, with “fairness” and
the common welfare among the people of the country. The power and authority of
the government are rooted from the will of the people. However, don’t you think
that this is the very reason why the country is not unified at all?
It is true that the very basis of a republic government is that it is decided by
the people. Citizens are given the chance to vote for who they ideally think as a great
leader for the country. When officials are elected, it primarily means that most of the
people trust them for the betterment of the country.
Yet, when the leader has been decided by the majority, strikes and rallies
occur among those who never wanted them to govern and those who gradually
became opposed to that elected official, causing trouble and chaos. Thus, in a deeper
sense, there is no unification.
Such faith is also bait to corruption. In the year 2000, former President Joseph
Estrada was charged with perjury and plunder, and was soon convicted over criminal
and civil cases. In the year 2014, 18 senators were identified to be participants of the
Priority Development Fund Scam or commonly known as the pork-barrel scam,
spearheaded by businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, exposing more than 2 billion
Philippine pesos. And we are knowledgeable of other corruption cases during the
reign of former President Ferdinand Marcos and all those preceding him.
After years under a democratic government, with results that repeat, is it not
right to try and change the system?
