Reading Level: 8th Grade 2/19 Spring 2019 8th Grade World History Using varying levels of agreement to stimulate discussion Learning Intention: Explain how the various dictators that came to power in the 1930s Success Criteria: I can describe and explain the various dictators and how they came to power in between the wars. Rationale: This Unit is about the rise of dictators in between World War I and World War II and since the power went out suddenly we could not watch the videos we were going to watch so we switched on the fly to a different activity. Materials: None Differentiation: I can rephrase my statements in order to make them more easily understood. Activities: Instructor: First I will have the students stand up Then I will explain that we are going to be changing the activity since we cannot watch the videos we had planned so we will be doing something else instead. I am going to give them a statement and they need to move based on how much they agree or disagree with it. On the right side of the room will be agree, middle will be neutral and left will be disagree. I will say a statement, such as was Hitler an effective ruler? And then allow students to move. Once they move I will foster a discussion/debate by allowing students to share why they chose to stand where they did and then defend their position to those who stood opposite of them. Students: Move around the room and then share their point of view on each statement. WICOR: Inquiry and Collaboration are present in this lesson Evaluation/Assessment: The lesson will be successful if the students participate in the activity and can have a meaningful discussion. Closing Activity: Give the students time to return to their desks and pack up their things.
