Introduction to Power Chords (Or ‘5’ Chords)

About:

 Power chords sound neutral/hollow compared to major and minor chords.

 This quality sounds good with overdrive/distortion and suits rock music
hence the name ‘power’ chords.

 The chord consists of two notes: the first and fifth degrees of the major scale.
The first or root note is often doubled to make three notes in total.

Examples:

Tip-Use fingers 1 and 3 stretched apart

G power chord or G5

C power chord or C5 D power chord or D5

Tip-mute (silence) unwanted strings marked X. For root A shapes such as C5 the
tip of finger 1 can mute the low E.
