Hail the industry giants!

Scale matters, and the world’s biggest hotel
companies continue to find traditional and
new ways to expand their empires.

N
ew brand development, M&A and
extensions into non-traditional
business models continue to
dominate the headlines among the world’s
leading hotel companies. While Marriott
International sorted through its acquisition
of Starwood, the likes of Wyndham Hotel
Group and AccorHotels found growth in
2017 through acquisition and brand exten-
sion (Wyndham acquired La Quinta, Accor
launched hostel brand Joe&Jo and took
stakes in 25hours and Banyan Tree).
There was little movement among the
top 10 listings of the Corporate 300 and
Consortia 25, with Marriott outpacing
its nearest competitor, Hilton, by almost
250,000 rooms. On the pages ahead,
