management in acute hospital settings
Authors: Abby Foster, Linda Worrall, Robyn O’Halloran, and Miranda Rose.
2016
According to the authors, they claim service provided for patients with aphasia in the
acute hospital setting is reported to be inconsistent with the practice recommendations.
They note how this practice gap is unclear. The article prefaces with the role of speech
language pathologists is to advocate for agents of change when they see their clients not
obtaining optimal treatment. The article includes the data from the authors’ interviews
with 14 speech language pathologist who work with acute post stroke aphasia patients.
The results included modifiable factors to improve aphasia management and gained
insight to the hospital’s priorities in relation to stroke patients.

The Effect of Clinical Experience on Perceived and Self-Reported Empathy in Novice
Speech Language Pathology Clinicians
Erline V. Nakano
2017
The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the empathy trajectory of novice
speech- language pathologists in the field of medicine. The author gathered this
information by observing the effect of one semester of clinical experience and the
graduate clinicians self- reported empathy in their first semester of graduate school.
Through the quantitative findings, it revealed that graduate students were able to identify
high and lows levels of relational empathy in direct patient care by using a modified
CARE measure. These findings remained stable from pre-test to post-test. Direct contact
and work with client and caregivers during a student’s externship found to be directly
correlated to a steady empathy trajectory for future work in a hospital setting. Instead of a
decline in the empathy trajectory, it was shown to be a rewarding experience rather than
leading into burnout feelings in the field of medicine.
