This article explains in depth the different approaches to communication, speech,
and language development for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The authors
include specialists, physicians, and parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. It
is focused on how important it is to provide communication means for a child at a young
age, and to then provide a sense of community. It discusses the advanced technology of
Cochlear Implants (CI), the duo of learning spoken and sign language for the children,
and what parent-child communication looks like. The people interviewed in this article
provide details for a bilingual approach and how it enriches linguistic competence. Every
author gives information about possible language approaches though they all common
ground: children need to learn language.
