Subject: For Julie Hinds: Exclusive on “Oh, you fancy!” exhibit for black hair & fashion

Ms. Hinds:

20 years ago, two twin brothers named Mark & Marlon Austin were producing handcrafted ties
as a part-time hobby. Today, those same brothers have received national praise for the creation
of Bespoke Couture (a luxury fashion brand), and how it has impacted African American fashion
culture.

The story of Mark & Marlon is just a glimpse into the macrocosm of African American culture,
and one of many designers that are currently featured in the “Oh, you Fancy!” exhibit for black
hair & fashion at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The objective of
these designers is to influence what we wear and empower our sense of self through beautiful
clothes and accessories. I believe a story about the exhibit would be ideal for the Detroit Free
Press. Your recent article on the Norman Rockwell painting was incredibly compelling, and I
think the “Oh, you Fancy!” exhibit has the ability to spark the same kind of emotion.

The Charles H. Wright museum is offering the Detroit Free Press exclusive access to write a
story on the “Oh, you fancy!” exhibit. This offer gives you creative control ability to use
whatever writers and photographers you’d like. In addition, we will help you arrange interviews
with designers that are apart of the exhibit, as well as staff members at the Charles H. Wright
Museum. Thank you for your time and consideration, and please let me know if there’s anything
else you might need. My direct phone line is (313) 494-5800.
