School Lunches

Students in elementary all the way up through high school enjoy having a lunch break.

You get time away from the class room, and you can talk with your friends. In my high school

we looked forward to the half-hour break, but not the food that was available. The food was

always nasty, and nobody wanted to eat it. Many would pack, but others did not have the food at

home to pack.

I remember eating lunch with my friends, and my friend Lexi pulled a feather out of her

mouth after eating a chicken nugget. We have had students with what looked to be mold on their

food, they were simply told to “eat around it”. Every Friday we had pizza, and on Monday we

had leftover pizza from Friday. I wondered how they got away with using leftover food from the

week before. I want to know what the standards are for school lunches. That is what interested

me to pick this topic.

When thinking about this topic I feel passionate. I think it is so important to research

what schools can feed us at school. Before doing research, I feel excited to find out what

standards they must use. I think it is so important to make yourself aware of the rules they are

supposed to be following. On this topic I believe that there are certain standards they must

follow. I am not entirely sure what the standards are. I know that they must print a menu out and

send it in to be checked. I also know that the school did not always follow the menu.

I am interested in finding out if the state tells the cooks what to fix, or if the cooks must

make their own menu. I also would like to find out what guidelines they have on what they can

fix.
